The Organization of American States Wednesday gave Honduras 72 hours to reinstate deposed President Manuel Zelaya or face suspension from the group, ahead of the ousted leader's planned talks here with US officials.
The organization's general assembly instructed Secretary General Jose' Miguel Insulza to undertake "diplomatic initiatives aimed at... the reinstatement of President Jose' Manuel Zelaya Rosales," within the next three days.
If these efforts prove fruitless, Honduras will be barred from the OAS, in keeping with group's charters, according to a communique.
BUT!
We have a problem kids.
Seems they had good reason to get rid of Jose'.
I'm only going from memory here but something like this happened.
1. Jose' wanted to change the constitution to get a second term in November
2. The Supreme court said no!
3. Jose' had his people steal the ballots (Which had been supplied by Venezuela) and distribute them anyway.
4. Jose' then got in a shouting match with their Congress or Court or something or other.
5. When things got really rank either Congress or the Supreme Court told the army to go in and remove him. (Soldiers stormed Zelaya's residence and flew him into exile early Sunday after he insisted on trying to hold a referendum asking Hondurans if they wanted to reform the constitution. The Supreme Court, Congress and the military all deemed his planned ballot illegal.)
6. Lucky for Jose' this isn't thirty or forty years ago so the army just put him on a plane out of the country instead of shooting him.
7. On top of all this Jose' has severe mental problems........ i.e. He's bloody nuts!
8. From all accounts the Honduras government got rid of Jose' legally and humanely so what is all the fuss about?
In Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez denounced the Honduran military as "gorillas" in a speech to non-commissioned military officers.
"But we are certain that there are patriotic generals in Honduras, there must be," Chavez added.
Chavez has been an important ally of Zelaya, who has moved increasingly to the left since being elected as witnessed by this picture of Jose and his two best buddies, Chavez and Raul Castro!
Meanwhile, Honduras' interim leader warned that the only way his predecessor will return to office is through a foreign invasion — though a potential showdown with the ousted president was delayed due to action Wednesday by the Organization of American States.
The U.N. General Assembly voted by acclamation Tuesday to demand Zelaya's immediate restoration, and the Organization of American States said Wednesday that coup leaders have three days to restore Zelaya to power before Honduras risks being suspended from the group.
That period for negotiation prompted Zelaya to announce he was putting off his plans to return home on Thursday until the weekend.
Micheletti vowed Zelaya would be arrested if he returns, even though the presidents of Argentina and Ecuador have signed on to accompany him along with the heads of the Organization of American States and the U.N. General Assembly.
Zelaya "has already committed crimes against the constitution and the law," said Micheletti, a member of Zelaya's Liberal Party who was named interim leader by Congress following the coup. "He can no longer return to the presidency of the republic unless a president from another Latin American country comes and imposes him using guns."
I'll say one thing kids, they sure know how to have a good time down there!
