Saturday Morning Confusion

As the Transportation Safety Board of Canada continues to investigate the fatal crash involving a train and city bus in Ottawa earlier this week, a somber coincidence has linked the train to another fatal collision two years ago.

The locomotive pulling the passenger train toward Toronto on Wednesday appears to be the same locomotive that collided with a truck driven by 22-year-old John Jobson near Glencoe, Ont., on July 29, 2011.

 

Images obtained as part of separate Transportation Safety Board investigations appear to be of the same vehicle. In each case, the locomotive is numbered 915, with the code EPA-42A included on its side. Other traits appear similar, including light placement and design.

A Via Rail spokesperson confirmed the same locomotive was present in both collisions.

Officials are looking into the possibility that the engine is "cursed" and are considering an exorcism on the train.

(On a serious note: Reports are starting to circulate that the bus driver was diabetic and this had an impact on his failure to react to the train!)

Speaking of diabetics: Residents of a north-end Hamilton neighbourhood are struggling to understand how a woman and her six children lived with the body of her dead husband and father in their home for months.

The body of Peter Wald, 51, was discovered in his home on St. Matthews Avenue, off of Barton Street East, on Tuesday. An employee from a foreclosure company found the body when trying to evict Wald and his family.

Regional coroner Dr. Jack Stanborough told CBC Hamilton that Wald’s body had been found in an “advanced state of decomposition.”

“Evidence suggests he’d been dead for weeks, if not months,” Stanborough said.

Next-door neighbour Brenda Dennis is convinced Wald had been dead for at least four months.

“The house has been closed all summer with that body in there,” she said.

The last time Dennis or her husband Brian saw Wald was back in January, when he was getting out of his blue Astro van — his prized possession. Wald, a spiritual man, had painted it all over with religious slogans. He’d even placed tinfoil in the shape of crosses on the headlights so they shone in the shape of a crucifix, Brian said.

“He got out of the van, and he was having trouble walking,” Brian said. “We know he was diabetic — and that was the last we saw of him.”

At first, when the Dennises asked family members next door how Wald was doing, they were told, “Oh, he’s got the flu, he’s resting.” Then in March, they got a very different answer: “He’s in God’s hands now.”

“That’s the only answer you ever got,” Brenda said. “They didn’t say he was here, they didn’t say he was in the hospital, they didn’t say he was in a nursing home — and now, god, if the sheriff hadn’t come, how long would he have been up there?”

I just finished an article by Andrew Leach called "A brave new world for the North American oil market" where he had pages of graphs and lists and pictures and statistics, all explaining how Canadian Crude was transported, and processed, and marketed, and used by us................................, and when it was all over I still didn't know what it was all about!

I don't have the time to wade through decades of mind-numbing scientific journals to corroborate this, so I'll take that at face value.

From what I understand about evolution, it makes sense that our DNA would play a significant role in determining who it is we'd like to reproduce with. And besides, if you've ever read a Michel Houellebecq novel, the first thing you'll probably think at hearing of this scheme is that it represents the most logical progression of the online dating industry. Why bother with personality questionnaires when you can take it to the genes?

In quick brushstrokes, the company provides a basic kit to consumers who then test themselves and return the swab for analysis. At present, Instant Chemistry is paired with two pre-existing dating services ‐ Misty River Introductions (Ontario & Quebec) and Camelot Introductions (Manitoba & Saskatchewan) — who plan to match members based on the compatibility of their genetic tests. This is a pretty humble start given the size of these services, but I suppose that makes sense.
