Even though he is vilified, and lots false information about him is spread by the U.S., good ol' Hugo is not the poster boy for informed and logical thought.
That's why this didn't surprise me.
Scared me? Ya!
Surprised me? No!
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called for regulation of the Internet on Saturday while demanding authorities crack down on a critical news Web site that he accused of spreading false information.Because it came upon us so quickly and spread even faster, most governments were too slow to realize the impact of the Internet and couldn't jump in fast enough to stop, or even re-direct it!
In a televised speech, Chavez said: "The Internet can't be something free where anything can be done and said. No, every country has to impose its rules and regulations," Chavez said.
This has been remarkably fortunate for us since ideology can't tolerate a free market of thinking.
Had governments shaped the World Wide Web I can guarantee you that it would look quite bit different than it does now, and might not even work anymore!
Or just be an extension of a Government's propaganda machine!
That, my friends, is the reason we all have to be constantly vigilant against any outside interference with our Web.
