PORT DOVER, Ont. – Whatever the weather on Friday the 13th, Port Dover can always count on a good crowd and a good party.
The large number of people who came to the lakeside for the first of three Friday the 13th motorcycle rallies this year proved that the event has irresistible drawing power. There was a wintry change in the weather the night before, but that didn’t keep people away. Nor did it keep motorcycles off the road.
“It’s no different that riding a skidoo – just a lot more fun,” said Dean VanKuik of Bolton, Ont., a member of the Canadian Ural Russian Dnepr Riders Group. “We’re out on our bikes all the time. We have a Polar Bear ride every Jan. 1. We have events and rallies all year around. This is just another excuse for us to get out and ride.”
Peter Pacos of Fredonia, New York, came to town wearing a bison-skin great coat.
“I’m a die-hard biker,” he said. “Wherever there’s a biker party, I’m there.”
Motorcycle enthusiasts have been coming to Port Dover every Friday the 13th since 1981. A well-attended rally during the nice weather will attract as many as 150,000 people and 15,000-plus motorcycles to the lakeside community of 6,000.
The small town is expecting large crowds at the next two Friday the 13th rallies this year in April and July.
