MSNBC just did a survey on what people thought about the Bible and we here at Perspective managed to get an advanced copy of it for your thoughts and opinion.
(I think the Koran might have about the same results, but don't quote me on that because it does go so far as to state that it is the personal word of God! This is OK I guess, since if you're going to pull a fast one you might as well do it on the highest authority!)
However, back to the topic at hand. After polling thousands of people here in North America, (Not the rest of the world) they found that about one third (33%) of respondents thought the Bible was fundamentally a work of parables and stories with some historical facts thrown in. (I am proud to count myself as a member of this group!)
A further one third (People that I don't have too much of a problem with since I do believe in freedom of religion, no matter how screwed up your wiring is) thought that the Bible has some inaccuracies but is fundamentally true.
The last third of all people surveyed are the one's I have a big problem with.
These are the folks that believe every detail in the Bible is 100% TRUE.
Yes bunky, it is the inerrant, holy, literal word of GOD and should not be questioned! Your undivided, blind obedience is what is required of you, and nothing less!
SO, LET'S HAVE A LOOK AT A FEW PASSAGES!
God good to all, or just a few?
PSA 145:9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.
JER 13:14 And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.
War or Peace?
EXO 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.
ROM 15:33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
Is Jesus equal to or lesser than?
JOH 10:30 I and my Father are one.
JOH 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
The fate of Judas.
ACT 1:18: "Now this man (Judas) purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out."
MAT 27:5-7: "And he (Judas) cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests...bought with them the potter's field."
Famous last words.
MAT 27:46,50: "And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?" that is to say, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" ...Jesus, when he cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost."
LUK 23:46: "And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, "Father, unto thy hands I commend my spirit:" and having said thus, he gave up the ghost."
JOH 19:30: "When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished:" and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost."
The GENEALOGY OF JESUS?
In two places in the New Testament the genealogy of Jesus son of Mary is mentioned. MAT 1:6-16 and LUK 3:23-31. Each gives the ancestors of Joseph the CLAIMED husband of Mary and Step father of Jesus. The first one starts from Abraham(verse 2) all the way down to Jesus. The second one from Jesus all the way back to Adam. The only common name to these two lists between David and Jesus is JOSEPH, How can this be true? and also How can Jesus have a genealogy when all Muslims and most Christians believe that Jesus had/has no father.
Ascend to heaven.
"And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." (2KI 2:11)
"No man hath ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven, ... the Son of Man." (JOH 3:13)
Do you answer a fool?
PRO 26:4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
PRO 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit
AND FOR EVERYONE HOLDING THEIR BREATH WHILE WAITING FOR THE SECOND COMING?
MAT 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
MAR 13:30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
LUK 21:32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.
Now this list doesn't include such glaring insults to our intelligence as the Universe being only 6000 years old, or Adam being made literally from dirt, or Eve being made from his rib, or the whole world being covered in water during the great flood, .(Note: This would require steady, worldwide rainfall at the rate of about 6 inches per minute, 360 inches per hour, 8640 inches per day--for 40 days and nights--so as to cover the entire earth with an endless ocean 5 miles deep, thus burying 29,000 ft. Mt. Everest under 22 ft. of water. How did the author know the depth of the water? Did Noah take soundings? And where has all this water gone?) or for that matter, Noah being able to round up all the creature on the planet and get them on a boat. (Can you imagine the STINK!) and THEN...... GE 8:20 Noah's first recorded action following the flood is to sacrifice one of every clean animal and bird. (Wait a minute, he got two of each so if he sacrificed one then there weren't any pairs left to mate!!!!) or when God obliges Joshua (JS 10:12-14) by making the sun and moon stand still (So that he can finish his battle by daylight) or that all animals were created in their present form and not by evolution and that dinosaurs and men lived together at the same time and on and on.
What people fail to realize is that these works are two THOUSAND years old and written by people who had no knowledge of even the primitive science that was available then, so they had to make a lot of this stuff up!
In conclusion, I have just one thought for all the Bible Thumpers..... get in the game boys. After all, remember what Mamma said; "Believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear or read!"
