OBAMA WIMPS OUT!

President Obama made his first big mistake this week and it wasn't for calling the cops "stupid!"

No sir!

His mistake was for stopping there, instead of ripping a new hole in the entire Cambridge Police Department.

(I was going to go on a long rant about this subject, but then I ran into an article by LIsa Van Dusen of Sun Media that sums it all up much better than I could!)

As a friend of Gates and a former constitutional law prof no doubt familiar with Fourth Amendment protections regarding search and seizure and probable cause and with Miranda rights, which officer Crowley apparently forgot, Obama didn't have to also be a black man in America to offer an expert opinion on the incident.

In Cambridge Thursday, the police stood by Crowley's conduct if not his dropped charges. "I don't believe Sgt. Crowley acted with any racial motivation at all," said Commissioner Robert Haas, though he is forming a panel of experts to look into that issue.

What a bunch of crap!

The idea of Henry Louis Gates Jr. being busted as a ridiculously overqualified second-storey man in his own house is so classic, so perfectly implausible yet possible, that it sounds like the first 10 minutes of a Spike Lee film or maybe a dark vignette in the next Paul Haggis script.

To believe that Gates was arrested with good cause July 16, you don't have to believe that a cop would think there was nothing amiss in an older man breaking into a house through the front door at high noon, using a limo driver as a wheel man.

You only have to believe that a 42-year-old white cop would feel so threatened when the famous black Harvard professor he was questioning in his own home began to get irate over the implausibility of the situation that he would feel the need to redirect the narrative as it was unfolding.

More important, you have to believe a cop responsible for diversity training didn't know which triggers would defuse, as opposed to escalate, an argument with an irate, falsely accused, jet-lagged 58-year-old black man.

Gates apparently behaved exactly the way you would expect a Harvard professor with no criminal record being questioned for being caught red-handed in his own home to behave.

Having dealt with racism in America as an academic issue and as a fact of his own life, Gates began commenting on what was unfolding.

"Why, because I'm a black man in America?" Gates snapped at officer James Crowley as he was being questioned about being in his own house.

Things apparently when downhill from there, or became in officer Crowley's words, "loud and tumultuous," with Gates taken away in handcuffs, charged with disorderly conduct.
There are also indications that Prof. Gates was lured out onto his porch where it would be easier to arrest him since he was now "out in public!"

Which means, for now, it's shaping up to be more of a Tom Wolfe novel than a Spike Lee film.
