It was eight years ago today, as the whole world watched in stunned silence, that the events of what we now call 9/11 unfolded!
Naturally there were all sorts of programs on this subject this last night and the one I ended up watching was about the conspiracy theories, and what was really (cough, cough) behind the attacks.
Now I have done more than a couple of articles on conspiracy theories, so my position is well known, and I don't have a great amount of patience with people that try and convince me that there was some nefarious plot by the Government, the CIA, the Jews, right wing lunatics or Aunt Rosie behind it all.
In spite of this there were a few points that struck a chord with me, and one of them was that there might have been a government cover up to the extent that the intelligence community knew beforehand that something was up, but due to lack of good info, or failure to act on good info, they missed the boat!
This was one of the milder theories, and one that I personally think might be all to plausible, given the record of the U.S. intelligence agencies!
Then of course, at the other end of the spectrum, there were the guys that claimed Osama bin Laden had nothing to do with it, and the whole thing was a plot by the Bush Administration to get an excuse to go to war!
These guys were all straight out of the loony bin, but one of them got me to thinking about stuff that directly concerned me and I will tell you how!
The main "Truther," (that's what they call themselves) actually had a PHD in one of the sciences so he wasn't a dumb guy.
But, in spite of the evidence he was shown, he absolutely refused to believe, and made up all sorts of stupid reasons why he didn't believe....... that there was no conspiracy!
It slowly dawned on me that this fellow wasn't going along with what WE wanted him to believe, because he was stuck on what HE wanted to believe.
What it came down to kids, was an attack on his "comfort level!"!
Outside influences were trying to change the thinking of a guy that had already made up his mind..... and in a case like this any argument that doesn't re-enforces his particular belief system is naturally discarded because it makes him uncomfortable.
So to make a long story short, when it comes down to a choice between what you're personally comfortable with, as compared to what someone else wants you to consider, your own beliefs and comfort zone win every time no matter how much logic and common sense you're presented with.
Ta Daaa!
Now, getting back to how it affect me!
As you know, I wrote a book called "The Plain Truth About God" (what the church doesn't want you to know!) and to be perfectly honest the sales have been much less than I ever imagined they would be.
As a matter of fact, dear reader, they were almost non-existent!
This has bothered me to no end and I kept thinking of reasons why the book wasn't selling..... including the possibility that I just wasn't a good writer, or that I was a good writer who wrote a bad book, or....... well, let's put it this way!!!
I even went so far as to briefly imagine that maybe God prevented the book from becoming popular because it would undermine people's belief system and faith in mainstream religion.
(I know that sounds outright dumb, but when you're desperately searching for answers all sorts of weird shit pops into your head!)
And then last night as I was watching the conspiracy show it suddenly came to me!
The reason my book didn't sell as well as I thought it would was because I was trying to get people to come around to my way of thinking, when all the time they wanted to believe what they believed, and refused to come out of their own "comfort zone!"
This made me feel a bit better, but it still doesn't do much about the crappy sales!
