NATO calls for linking of US, Russia defences!

Just a few short days after President Obama announced the cancellation of the Eastern European Missile Defence Plan, I ran across this article on my home page today, and would like to show you some excerpts from it because they re-enforce, (sort of) what I have been saying for years.

BRUSSELS (AFP) – NATO reached out to Russia Friday in an effort to mend badly bruised ties, inviting Moscow to consider linking its missile system to those of the United States and the military alliance.

In a landmark speech in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen also encouraged Russia to undertake a joint review of the new security threats they face, as the basis of a new partnership between them.
Right there is one of the key points kids!

Russia and the NATO members have far more in common than they do differences, and as the world polarizes into distinct geographical zones of influence, we need a solid alliance of countries that share a historical and cultural affinity centered on the European model.

Gone are the days of Empire, and the new political realities dictate that the old rivalries of the past millennium be discarded in favour of "Realpolitik!"

The policy of Realpolitik was formally introduced to the Nixon White House by Henry Kissinger. In this context, the policy meant dealing with other powerful nations in a practical manner rather than on the basis of political doctrine or ethics!
By using the term Realpolitik, I refer to the inclusion of Russia in NATO to some degree by referring to that old saying, "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer!" (But question whether Russia is really the enemy we have to guard against any longer!)

The world is a dangerous place bunky, and I think that upon sober reflection we will come to the realization that we have much more in common with Russia than we have differences.

Especially where our joint security is concerned.

Russia's envoy to the world's biggest military alliance welcomed the speech as "very positive and very constructive", but said the proposals in it needed to be carefully analysed.

"We need Russia as a partner in resolving the great issues of our time," Rasmussen, NATO's top politician, said in the speech at the Carnegie Endowment think-tank in Brussels.

"We should explore the potential for linking the US, NATO and Russia missile defence systems at an appropriate time," he said, a day after Washington dropped plans to extend its massive missile shield into Europe.
Now remember that I told you about Obama dropping the planned shield, with 10 interceptors based in Poland linked to a powerful radar in the Czech Republic, because it deeply angered Moscow, which saw the multi-billion dollar structure as a threat to Russian security.

WHICH IT WAS!

Now here comes the good part, which this poor, little, insignificant ol' boy from London, Ontario has been preaching for the longest time.

Rasmussen also invited Russia to focus on the common threats they face, and to work together in a modernised NATO-Russia Council, where the two discuss areas of cooperation and air their many differences.

"This is why I propose that we undertake a joint review of NATO's and Russia's common threats and challenges. We need an agreed analytical basis which we can then use to further enhance our practical cooperation," he said.
Rasmussen's speech, symbolically his first major public address since taking office in August -- a year after the Georgia war -- appeared to offer a new beginning, and Rogozin welcomed its content.

"I think that it was very positive and very constructive and we have to analyse together all the ... proposals about the new beginning of NATO-Russia cooperation" he told reporters minutes after the speech was over.

"It's good news for us," he added.

When asked whether the speech contained new elements, Rogozin said: "Yes, absolutely."
Rasmussen also said that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's ideas on a new Euro-Atlantic security arrangement should be taken into consideration.

"We must all aim for a Euro-Atlantic security architecture in which Russia sees herself reflected," he said.
He also invited Russian experts to participate in the recently started process whereby NATO is re-writing its mission statement, the so-called strategic concept, in response to modern security threats and needs.

WELL FOLKS!

All I can say is that these people are finally coming to their senses..... or have they been secretly listening to me the whole time?
