How I first got hip to religion!

Our lives are usually a long series of dull and boring days, punctuated by a few moments of insight or circumstance that ends up changing our direction and purpose!

So it was with me when I gained my first experience with religion and all it's consequences.

It was in the late 50's and an older woman who lived across the road from us casually mentioned one day that the world would end in 1960.

I don't even remember this old broads name, and the only thing I could tell you for sure was that she was a heavy duty Catholic and claimed that the end of the world was predicted in the Bible.

Now I wasn't old enough to have given any thought what-so-ever to death and dying, and this was the first time I was forced to contemplate the idea of my own demise!

Since I was only about ten at the time, I was in no position to question her, or the Bible, about the truth of these statements..........., so naturally her proclamation caused me quite a bit of anxiety and concern.

Even with the assurance from my mother that the old broad was a little bit nuts, I decided to hedge my bets and spent the next few years worrying about the fact that my short life was about to be cut back even further in a blast of heavenly trumpets and angelic horsemen.

(Not until we were well into the 1960's did I start to let my guard down somewhat and entertain the fact that I might still be around for a while.)

Looking back on the whole thing with the benefit of hindsight, I suppose it was the calm assurance and serenity in her faith that made her so convincing.

But, to a young guy whot didn't have much experience in these matters, all she did was give me a few years of grief and a lasting skepticism of all things heavenly!
