Fit in or get out!

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but when my parents, and millions more like them came over from Europe to make a new life for themselves, the first thing they had to do was learn how to fit in with society!

Plain and simple!

Ya wanna live here, you become a Canadian! (Or American)

The main duty they had as new citizens was to learn what their "OBLIGATIONS"were!

My how things have changed in the following years!

Now most of the immigrants come from third world countries, and it seems that someone meets them at the border and hands them a booklet which explains their "RIGHTS" rather than their duties!

(Oh yea, and a leaflet on how to cheat the system!)

And it's not much better in Europe now!

Lis Hebbadj, who runs a halal butcher shop in the western French city of Nantes, made headlines this year after his wife was fined for driving in her full-face veil in April.

First of all, that is illegal for obvious reasons and if she can't comply she shouldn't be driving!

Chances are she wouldn't be allowed to drive AT ALL where they came from!

(The conservative government’s recent efforts to ban the head-to-toe Muslim veil has made it a hot-button issue in France. A draft law that is expected to be passed later this year would forbid such attire in all public places in France.)

Now, following a nearly two-month investigation, Hebbadj has also been charged with bigamy, welfare fraud and violating labour laws, Nantes prosecutor Xavier Ronsin told a news conference.

Seems the guy has four wives, even though he claims three of them are only friends.

(Two of them are living back in Dubai with about 8 of the 17 kids this guy has, but they are still collecting welfare in France!)

On top of everything else the asshole got his French citizenship through false pretenses and is about to be stripped of his French-e-ness!

Let's total this whole mess up.

-One of his wives won't conform to French law that doesn't allow wearing a full face veil when driving a car! (Makes sense)

-He is a multiple bigamist! (He lied to become a French citizen and then brought 3 more wives and a whole bunch of kids over!)

-He committed fraud to the tune of $180,000 over three years by working and collecting welfare! (That's $60,000 dollars a year!)

The 35-year-old was placed under judicial control, forced to hand in his passport and pay a 10,000 euro (12,000 dollar) bail before leaving the court house in a police van, hidden from journalists.

His four companions including his wife will be summoned to appear before a magistrate soon to also be formally charged with welfare fraud and anything else they can think up, said the prosecutor.

Hopefully the whole lot o them will be given a one way ticket back to the Middle-East!

When my family immigrated, they were expected to follow US law. They also pursued citizenship. The first generation, however, never learned English -- they lived in an area that spoke their mother-tongue. The second generation reacted against that and forgot the mother-tongue so that the third generation (grandchildren) never communicated with their grandparents (well, I learned enough to do so, but most of them didn't).
There is a difference between law and culture. We need to remember that. This nation (I speak of the US, but it also applies to Canada) assigns marriage law to the states / provinces. That does mean citizenship requires adherence to local law as well as national law. If there is fraud in this (by non-disclosure) or any other area, it is grounds for stripping of citizenship (or denial of) and deportation.
I have mixed feelings on the veil issue. Several women I know wear one, and it fits in such as way that they can see as much as anyone else. Driver's licenses test for eyesight, not 'being seen'. We would not prosecute someone for wearing a ski mask, be it a warm or cold day -- if that was also banned, I might feel differently.
Having traveled, I knew following local law was non-optional. That should be no different for residence. It is a duty of 'community' as well as citizenship. Perhaps it is about respect for others.

Have you been to South Florida in the past fee years? Although I've been here for well over half a century, I no longer fit in at all, because I don't speak Spanish. Even in major chains such as Office Depot, there are often no clerks on duty who speak English.
Instead of requiring immigrants to conform with those of us who've been here for just about all time, our signs, toll instructions, governmental websites and automated calls are all in Spanish, and I'm very much out of the loop.
I have no objection to having these "new" South Floridians here. For the most part, they're wonderful, interesting people. I married a Cuban immigrant who came before Castro, and he's shocked by the lack of proficiency, too.
As an English teacher, I was appalled by the number of my students and their parents, and an occasional school administrator, who said I didn't belong in the classroom unless I was teaching in Spanish -- in an ENGLISH class!
Something just doesn't smell right...
