People in a small town on Vancouver Island saw a strange scene Tuesday morning on their way to work — a man stripped to his underwear standing handcuffed to a pole.
When Lantzville, B.C., police arrived, the shivering 24-year-old appeared to be suffering from hypothermia, having stood out there all night.
Police took him to hospital.
Once there, he told police he had been leaving a friend’s house the night before when he was smacked over the head with a baseball bat or piece of wood.
Three men shoved him into a pickup truck, yanked a bag over his head and punched and beat him with sticks.
He was then tossed out and led a few metres away, only to feel handcuffs snap around his wrists.
His captors left him standing at the pole wearing only his boxers, and drove off with his wallet.
The man refused to identify the trio and wouldn’t say why they attacked him.
Police suspect it involved drugs. “This is the end of the month,” Const. Gary O’Brien of Nanaimo RCMP said. “It’s drug debt collection time.” (That and welfare cheque time!-Ed.)
