As a sign of my good faith as an Honest Broker we will solve one problem for free....., and anything after that can be negotiated!
This one concerns matters of interest to the United States and Russia!
First a quick backgrounder:
Viktor Bout, the suspected Russian arms merchant, is being quoted as saying U.S. authorities promised him a lighter sentence in exchange for information about his contacts.Meanwhile, the United States has concerns about the Russian legal system, and in particular........... this guy!
Bout was arrested in Thailand in 2008 in a U.S. sting on charges of conspiring to sell weapons to a terrorist group. He fought extradition, but was sent in November to New York, where he is in federal detention awaiting trial.
Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported Sunday that Bout said he was offered "a lighter sentence...and the possibility of bringing my family to the U.S.A., if I told all I know about my contacts in Russia and other countries. But I responded that I have nothing to say."
The comment was reportedly relayed by Alexander Otchainov, a Russian vice-consul in the U.S.
The US has criticised the new six-year sentence imposed by a Russian court on former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky.O.K......., here it comes bunky!
Khodorkovsky, who is near the end of an eight-year term for tax evasion, has been told he will stay jailed till 2017 for embezzlement and money-laundering.
The US said the new sentence seemed to be an abuse of Russia's legal system.
The Russian authorities have told the rest of the world to mind their own business over the trial.
The Obama administration has devoted a great deal of political effort to improving the relations with Russia over the last couple of years.
(And the simple solution is usually the best one!)
EXCHANGE PRISONERS!
That's right, Russia gets the arms guy........, and the States gets the oil guy!
(Now aren't you glad ya listened to me?)
