O.K. kids, 1535 and two Indians are talking on the shores of what we now call the St. Lawrence:
Indian #1 “I don’t know about all these newcomers. They’re changing the language used in commerce, they’re bringing different cultures, and there’s more and more of them. We should do something before our nation is changed forever!”
Indian #2 “Racist scare-mongerer. It’;ll never happen. After a generation or two, they’ll integrate!
In the meantime, who are we to declare this place has any identity?”
Indian #1 “Hey, it’s OUR land, OUR nation – we have the right to choose how it’s ethno-cultural identity is shaped, and personally I’m not keen on a land where our own language, heritage, ethnicity, and culture are slowly whittled away by massive importation of different people.”
Indian #2 “Oh – such an alarmist! Why not just admit that you’re a racist and you don’t like all those pale faces.
Open the gates! Let everyone in!”
We all know how THAT turned out.
