It is with a heavy heart we must report that Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet was NOT elected as Pope today in Rome!
On the fifth ballot white smoke came from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel today and a spokesman announced it was some guy from Argentina, or Botswana. or somewhere…………… we’re not sure where because our reporter didn’t hang around long after finding out it was not Cardinal Ouellet.
Mark McGowan, religious studies professor at the University of Toronto, said Ouellet’s elevation to the papacy would likely have resulted in a surge of general patriotism, but would not do much to rekindle religious fervour in an increasingly secular country.
“We’d feel the pride all Canadians would in seeing one of our own in a position of prominence internationally, but I don’t think it would have made difference in terms of the way in which Canadian Catholics behave,” he said in a telephone interview with the Perspective Naked News staff!.
(And don’t forget folks, our special “Pope on a Rope” offer for just $4.95 plus shipping, is still available until the end of business today!)
