Scientists believe that human DNA contains the story of our great migration around the globe, starting from Africa a few million years ago.
From analyses of our genetic code, and the genetic code of our ancestors, scientists have already pieced together part of the story: that early humans nearly went extinct during the last major ice age as their population reached fewer than 10,000 individuals; that when the ice sheets began to recede, around 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, the new environmental conditions allowed them to thrive, just as the reigning mastodons, sabre-toothed cats, and giants sloths began dying out; and that, in order to survive the age, modern humans – or Homo sapiens – clustered around pockets known as refugia, where climatic conditions remained relatively unchanged, allowing us to endure and eventually migrate outward.
