World powers on Thursday adopted a landmark resolution seeking to rid the planet of nuclear arms at an unprecedented Security Council summit hosted by US President Barack Obama. This one little article, hidden amongst a whole bunch of stuff on my home page, could be more important than the all rest of the news I read today!
As a rule, we humans have done some pretty stupid things, but every once in a while we show a bit of maturity and display flashes of what we could become as a race, if we would only grow up a bit.
The only reason we didn't annihilate ourselves during the cold was was from a common fear of "Mutually Assured Destruction," (MAD) and not through some great leap of logic or faith that it wasn't the right thing to do!
This new resolution, on the other hand, is the first time we have done something of this magnitude in the cold light of day without the "Sword of Damocles" hanging over our heads!
Just like a teenager who slowly starts to acquire "critical thinking," it gradually dawns on us humans that having nuclear weapons is not such a good idea since the irrational, hasty, hot headed and even crazy types still have the upper hand.
Quoting former US president Ronald Reagan, Obama told the meeting that "a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought."
"And no matter how great the obstacles may seem, we must never stop our efforts to reduce the weapons of war," he urged, as he became the first American president to chair a meeting of the UN Security Council.
"We must never stop until all until we see the day when nuclear arms have been banished from the face of the earth. That is our task. That can be our destiny."
Let's hope these are not just idle words, because they raise some serious questions about our future as a civilization.
It would be a shame to find out that the answer is "blowin' in the wind!"
