Meteorite fragment hits SUV

Normally, when you read a news article you identify with it in a detached manner unless it directly affects where you live or someone you know!

Then it hits a little too close to home......, so duck!

(You will see why I chose this description in a moment.)

Just a couple of miles up the road from me at the University of Western Ontario Astronomers have recovered a golf-ball sized fragment of a meteorite.

(The researchers had appealed to the public for help in locating a meteorite that lit up the sky west of Lake Ontario in September, and they released images, video and maps of its possible location.)

This heavenly projectile was described as a fireball about 100 times brighter than the full moon and the University's network of cameras in southern Ontario captured the descent and allowed researchers to project where it might have landed.

The meteor first appeared on camera above Georgian Bay and was tracked to an area between Hamilton and St. Catharines.

This means it came out of the North-West, almost flew right over my house and kept going towards Niagara Falls!

Astronomers at U.W.O. estimate that the meteor was travelling across the sky at nearly 75,000 km/h.

Phil McCausland, a postdoctoral fellow at Western's Centre for Planetary Science & Exploration, said the visual records, radar and sound wave data of the meteor event will allow scientists to reconstruct its orbit before it hit the Earth. "We can also figure out where it came from and how it got here, which is rare. In all of history, only about a dozen meteorite falls have that kind of record," he said in a release.

Well folks, after all the coverage of the meteor's fall on Sept. 25, a family in Grimsby, Ont., saw and made a connection between it and the smashed windshield of their sport utility vehicle.

Sure enough, under the front seat was a golf ball sized chunk of space rock!

And now that I think about it........, I wonder if I heard it go over that night and just dismissed it as being distant thunder?
