It’s another Saturday morning and here I am wondering just how middle-of-the-road I really am when It comes to politics!
(Personally, I think I walk that white line down the middle pretty good!)
So, let’s see if I’m right, and just where you stand on these issues.
First a definition of Left and Right.
Left wing is traditionally seen as being concerned with equal rights and opportunities for all, and with a philosophy of state provided help for poorer elements of society, usually funded by high taxes on the better off. the traditional "left winger" is often seen as being anti-traditional values, strongly anti-racist and anti-homophobic, feminist, and an advocate of human rights (even for criminals). They are stereotypically anti-monarchy, pro-choice, atheistic, and advocate a "soft" policy on crime and drugs.
Right wing is usually seen as being an advocate of the dog-eat-dog approach to society- you work for what you earn and should be allowed to keep it. People should take personal responsibility for themselves and not expect excessive help from the government. The typical "right-winger" is often seen as highly conservative and places high emphasis on family values, they are in favour of capital punishment and a tough justice system, they are often seen as sexist, homophobic, and occasionally racist. They are often very patriotic, pro-life, and highly religious.
Moderate would be anywhere between these two extremes.
What I’m going to do is give you MY views on Left and Right wing issues so you can judge your own predilections as well.
-- Left wing is pro-choice, Right wing is pro-life
On this I am all for abortions as long as it’s in the first trimester. (In other words, as long as the fetus isn’t viable.)
-- Left wing supports homosexual rights, Right wing doesn't
I support these rights and don’t believe in any form of discrimination, agree with “don’t ask, don’t tell,” and am against gay marriage although civil unions and benefits are O.K.
-- Left wing supports all environmentalist causes, Right wing is skeptical of environmentalism
I can’t for the life of me figure out why those asshole Right wingers think Global Warming is a hoax! I am an environmentalist.
-- Left wing supports affirmative action, Right wing believes it's reverse discrimination.
I have to go more with the Right than the Left on this one. I also believe ‘political correctness” is partly the result of this philosophy!
-- Left wing supports a Federal health care program, Right wing believes that's too much government interference.
Being from Canada I have to go with the Left. (The U.S. health care system is one of the main reasons I would never move there.) They need something like Canada or the French have. (Although I have to say that European models are usually better than Canada's)
--Left wing is anti-death penalty, Right wing is pro!
In certain cases I am all for the death penalty. For example I would love to see and hear Paul Bernardo fry!
--Left wing is anti-gun, Right wing is pro-gun.
Handguns should be illegal at all times since their only purpose is to kill other people, and only people that need to hunt in order to support themselves should be allowed to own a rifle!
-- Left wing believes in heavy taxation of the rich, Right wing believes that's a forced redistribution of wealth
This brings to mind Rowan and Martins “Laugh In” – “Sock it to ‘em!”
-- Left wing supports a perpetual welfare system, Right wing believes there should be a time limit on receiving welfare.
Although I think that Ontario’s habit of giving a single person $550 bucks a month to live on is criminal. (That leaves about 50 bucks a month for food) I don’t like the idea of a welfare state and there should be a time limit. A minimum living standard, which is a supplement to wages, (which they have in some parts of Europe) should also be considered!
-- Left wing supports more government control of business, Right wing believes in minimum government interference
Being a businessman I have to go with less interference here!
-- Left wing supports women’s rights. Right wing, not so much.
I am Left Wing on this one because of wage and social inequities, but I am against the backlash to these issues, such as feminism and political correctness – which I absolutely hate!!!!!!
So, did that help a bit............., or are you still confused?
