In a recent Rolling Stone Magazine interview, Canadian pop superstar Justin Bieber told the magazine, “I’m actually part Indian. I think Inuit or something? I’m enough per cent that in Canada I can get free gas.”This sparked the inevitable backlash on social media. Someone even made a fake status card for the recent high school graduate.

Several people wondered where he gets this free gas he spoke of, such as Shar Buff on Facebook.
Others suggested Bieber should visit a reserve in Canada.
Sandra LaFleur wrote this on Facebook:
“…I wonder if all those celebrities would want to experience a month on the rez? I wonder if they would like to truly experience the native realilty and spend a month in Atawapiskat? You know, poop in a slop pail, haul water into the house, also stuff the framework of the small house with clothes or whatever else is available to keep out the cold. I wonder if they would? And if they did, I wonder if they’d still go around saying they’re entitled to free gas? Just wondering…Many have called on the Biebs, who has about 25 million followers on Twitter, to apologize.

Others took it more lightly, but attribute Bieber’s comment to the education system and the Canadian population’s general lack of knowledge of First Nation issues.
Writing on the APTN National News’ Facebook page, Amanda Dale said, “ok so Justin was ignorant of his own culture and he is proof of the assimilation that took place…instead of bashing him can’t we educate and accept him? This is who we are as a people right?”
I don’t favour pillorying Justin Bieber because he thinks he can get free gas because he’s Indian or Inuit. He’s a highly talented teen with mistaken ideas about aboriginal life. Where is the wisdom and patience we are renowned for when it comes to teaching young people? The Twitter and FB campaign designed to humiliate and publically spank this teen is reprehensible.

And then, finally, some had their own suggestions for what Bieber should do to learn more about Aboriginal culture in Canada.
Sheldon Leon Cardinal said on the APTN Facebook page, “Put him in a sweat and see how Indian he is.”http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/story/2012/07/26/north-bieber-indian-inuit-comment-social-media-reaction.html?cmp=rss
