I remember when I was just a kid (16) we went to the opening of the brand new Toronto International Airport Terminal 1 in 1964. (The only reason we were there was because my dad was flying somewhere or other for his job as a rep for Volkswagen Canada.)
Being a as yet undiagnosed A.D.H.D. kid, I was all over the place in the new terminal, and had a little episode where I pushed a button at the bottom of an escalator and immediately brought the whole thing to a screeching stop.
I can joke about it now because I’m sure the statute of limitations has run out on this crime, but I still remember watching all the dignitaries on TV for the grand opening that night and the way I felt when they all had to walk up the dead escalator……… and some guy from the CBC commenting how it was a brand new terminal and stuff was already broken!
That memory is still fresh in my mind even though the terminal was torn down years ago, and this brings me to the next fond memory of Ontario Place being built on the shores of Lake Ontario. We went to see the very first I MAX film there called “North Of Superior.”
Boy it was something to see!
Now, I hear they are going to tear down the Cine-sphere and most of Ontario place because it too has outlived its usefulness!
On top of all this I found out last week that the house my dad built for us back in the sixties is being demolished to make was for an extension to highway 407.
I don’t know why they keep tearing this stuff down on me, but to make up for it I went out today and bought a nice red 1967 mustang ……… just like I had back in 1970.
