A quick-thinking walker in Canada survived a black bear attack last week by grabbing hold of its tongue and not letting go. Gilles Cyr said: “His mouth was wide open right in front of my face so the last thing I remember I had his tongue in my hand and I didn’t want to let go because he was trying to fight me off. He was hitting me with his claws, so I says, ‘If you’re going to hurt me, I’m going to hurt you too.’ He “bearly” survived with only a few claw marks and a bite.

A 50-year-old woman managed to prevent a massive python from crushing her to death in Kenya after it bit her and wrapped itself around her in a field in 2012. Roseline Akinyi fought valiantly for ten minutes and managed to free herself by literally grabbing the snake by the neck and choking it until it released her from its grasp.

-The world was stunned when nine-year-old James Barney Junior managed to fight himself free from the jaws of an alligator which attacked him. The schoolboy pried open the nine-foot beast’s mouth after it got hold off him as he swam in a lake in Florida, in the United States.

One of the most incredible escapes from a shark attack came when 13-year-old Rodney Fox was attacked by a great white while defending his Australian spear-fishing title. He gouged at its eyes to get it to release him but then it came back for more and he had to shove his arm down its throat, slicing the flesh off as he removed it. Amazingly the shark came back a third time but he still got out of its jaws. Even though Fox’s ribcage, lungs and upper stomach were exposed he survived after four hours of surgery.

A 65-year-old woman managed to fight off an attack by a mountain lion using a pen. Nell and Jim Hamm, 70, were walking in the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in California when the big cat wrestled Jim to the ground. After his wife hit it with a log it still wouldn’t didn’t let go. “I got the pen and tried to put it in his eye,” recalled Nell. “But it didn’t want to go in as easy as I thought it would.” In fact she stabbed so hard she bent the pen………….., but the lion eventually took flight.

When a wolf attacked a granny in Russia it probably didn’t expect the 56-year-old cow-herder to put up much resistance. Unfortunately for the wild beast, when it clamped its jaws around Aishat Maksudova she was within arms reach of an axe and promptly clumped it repeatedly over the head until it let go of her. Not surprisingly the wolf died but she emerged relatively unscathed “I wasn’t frightened” she added. (Experts believe the wolf let go because the old lady tasted terrible! -See picture!)

Brave Chelsi Camp bit the ear of a pit-bull which attacked her daughter in Texas, US, earlier this year. The dog clamped its jaws around two-year-old McKenzie, and wouldn’t let go of her so the tiger mom leapt on the animal and pushed her arm down its throat before sinking her teeth into it. Modestly, she said after the rescue: “You do whatever you can.”
