Well kids, here it is 5 o'clock in the morning and I still haven't slept because that stupid heart operation disrupted all the Circadian Rhythm of my body!
I guess things will get back to normal soon, but in the meantime let me tell you what they did to me!
As got to the hospital at 10:30 a..m on Thursday, June 26 and after the usual documentation and registration, I was wheeled up to the operating theatres on the second floor. (During the hour-long prep for the operation a got asked if I knew what my name was at least fifty times....... so that they didn't cut the guts out of the wrong person!)
Then there was the usual operating room chatter..... and at some point, while my attention was elsewhere, they knocked me out. (Sneaky bastards!)
The first thing they did was cut open a 6-inch slice of me down the middle of my chest and then peel the skin back so they could get a saw and cut my ribs away from the sternum. (If you think the dentist's drill is bad..........!)
We were about two hours into the operation by this time when in waltzes Dr. Micheal Chu to do his thing!
Dr. Chu stopped my heart and cut off the veins and arteries so he could run them thru a heart-lung machine. (They gotta stop the heart and literally kill you so that they can operate on the heart itself..... otherwise, it would be like doing a valve job on a still-running engine!)
With everything in place my heart was cut open and the mitral valve, which had been damaged and torn thru years of abusive treatment was sewn back together.
Dr. Chu then took a bow and exited stage left... while the rest of his team put poor Allan back together again!
After about six hours, (or six seconds subjective time) someone said "ALLAN.... the operation is over and it went well!"
And just like that, medical history can chalk up another victory. (Taken from my blog: "Allan's Perspective!")
