Back in 1859 there was a period of increase sunspot activity that, if it were to happened today, WOULD BURN OUT THE WORLD’S ELECTRICITY GRID for at least the next year or two!
(That’s at least how long it would take to replace the burnt out transformers!)
AND GUESS WHAT?
This wasn’t just an isolated incident kids, they have happened all the time throughout history!
(The last time they only fried the telegraph lines……., because that’s all there was!)
But this time?
Try living a couple of years without electricity!
(Those “survivalists” were right all along …………, just for the wrong reasons!)

In a new study, published in Nature Scientific Reports, researchers have found that, despite belonging to completely different lineages, humans and squid evolved EYES through tweaks to the same gene.
Like all organs, the eye is the product of many genes
working together. The majority of those genes provide information about
how to make part of the eye. For example, one gene provides information
to construct a light-sensitive pigment. Another gene provides
information to make a lens.
Most of the genes involved in making the eye read like a parts list – this gene makes this, and that gene makes that. But some genes orchestrate the construction of the eye. Rather than providing instructions to make an eye part, these genes provide information about where and when parts need to be constructed and assembled. In keeping with their role in controlling the process of eye formation, these genes are called “master control genes”.
The most important of master control genes implicated in making eyes is called Pax6. The ancestral Pax6 gene probably orchestrated the formation of a very simple eye – merely a collection of light-sensing cells working together to inform a primitive organism of when it was out in the open versus in the dark, or in the shade.
Today the legacy of that early Pax6 gene lives on in an incredible diversity of organisms, from birds and bees, to shellfish and whales, from squid to you and me. This means the Pax6 gene predates the evolutionary diversification of these lineages – during the Cambrian period, some 500m years ago.
The Pax6 gene now directs the formation of an amazing diversity of eye types. Beyond the simple eye, it is responsible for insects’ compound eye, which uses a group of many light-sensing parts to construct a full image. It is also responsible for the type of eye we share with our vertebrate kin: camera eye, an enclosed structure with its iris and lens, liquid interior, and image-sensing retina.
In order to create such an elaborate structure, the activities Pax6 controlled became more complex. To accommodate this, evolution increased the number of instructions that arose from a single Pax6 gene.

Sun news provides a refreshing answer to all the left wing media here in Canada, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why any right wing groups have to adopt ALL the right wing’s rhetoric, just like the lefties take on every left wing issue!
The reason I bring this up is because Sun News (E.G. Michael Coren and Ezra Levant) are going on about how “global warming” is all bullshit………., which is all bullshit!
On top of that, they are for gun proliferation, against abortions, for capital punishment, against socialism, for creationism, against evolution ……………, WHY CAN’T THEY (OR THE LEFT WING) JUST SUPPORT STUFF THAT MAKES SENSE, INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING THE “PARTY” LINE?

Nigeria – Islamic militants killed many people in an attack on a border town in Nigeria’s remote northeast, a state government official said today
Shops and homes were set ablaze and razed in the attack Monday night on Gamboru Ngala, on Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, Borno state information commissioner Mohammed Bulama told The Associated Press by telephone.
As many as 300 people were killed in the attack, according to local newspapers. The militants sprayed gunfire into the crowds of people at a busy market, that is open at night when temperatures cool in the semi-desert region, reported This Day newspaper.
Nigerian federal Senator Ahmed Zannah said the attack lasted about 12 hours, according to the newspaper. The insurgents set homes ablaze and gunned down residents who tried to escape from the flames, reported the paper.
Zannah blamed fighters of Nigeria’s homegrown Boko Haram terrorist network that has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of 276 teenage girls and is threatening to sell them into slavery.
Boko Haram’s five-year-old Islamic uprising has claimed the lives of thousands of Muslims and Christians. More than 1,500 people have died in their attacks so far this year. The insurgents say Western influences are corrupting and they want to impose an Islamic state in Nigeria, a country of 170 million of whom half are Christian.

you might get a sense that animals can understand certain cues from
people and that they sometimes try to communicate their wishes to
people.
Certainly not all pets are intelligent, but it’s a common experience for many people.
Wild animals aren’t so different from their domesticated cousins, so it should maybe not be surprising that various wild animals are intelligent in some ways. Here are just a few links on the growing evidence of advanced animal cognition.
• A bunch of dogs were trained to sit still in a functional magnetic resonance imaging brain scanner, and their brain scans show that dog brains have a special area dedicated to processing voices and meaningful sounds. Dogs and people have remarkably similar brain reactions to happy sounds (eg. baby giggles) and unhappy sounds (eg. coughing) which could partly explain why our species get along so well.
• PBS has a 3-part NOVA series — Inside Animal Minds — on the intelligence of animals. The 3-hour series covers tool use, communication skills, emotional intelligence, problem-solving abilities and social behaviors of a variety of wild and domesticated animals.
• Pigeons can learn to categorize various items and exhibit selective attention. Laboratory pigeons were able to distinguish computer-generated images and respond with appropriate pecking on a touchscreen.
