The left-wing is crazy and the right-wing scares the shit out of me!

Allan's Perspective is NOT recommended for the politically correct, or the overly religious. Some people have opinions. Some people have convictions......... What we offer is PERSPECTIVE!

Thursday 5 October 2017

We have a lot of smart people around this neck of the woods folks!

Dear Friends: "Let's get things back into perspective here!"

Lots of talk about where to put the new Eastern Headquarters for Amazon Inc. and although Toronto has a lot going for it the cost of living and even land prices are way out of whack.

However, these four sites around S. W. Ontario :  1. London-Woodstock. 2. Woodstock-KW.  3. K/W-Guelph, 3. Brantford-Hamilton fit the bill perfectly! (Lower cost of living, educated population and infrastructure, land availability, on major highway systems between Toronto and Detroit and a lower Canadian dollar!)

There are so many times when we either don't realize what's going on around us, or just plain don't know the importance of something that is staring us right in the face!

Take my town, London, Ontario. (Half way between Detroit and Toronto in beautiful S.W. Ontario) London is a city of about half a million and is a world renown center for biotech research, especially in transplant technology, cancer research and neurology, including cutting edge brain surgery (sorry, I couldn't resist the pun) as well as spinal cord research.

Between London and Toronto is a city called Kitchener/Waterloo and it is the Canadian equivalent of Silicon Valley and Fermi lab all rolled into one with some heavy duty research and development in Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Physics. (University of Waterloo)

AND THAT BRINGS US TO ONE OF THE TOP RESEARCH FACILITIES IN THE WORLD FOR PHYSICS KIDS: The Perimeter Institute in Waterloo!

 Q: What is Perimeter Institute?

Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is an independent, non-profit, scientific research organization working to advance our understanding of physical laws and develop new ideas about the very essence of space, time, matter, and information. Perimeter also provides a wide array of research training and educational outreach activities to nurture scientific talent and share the importance of discovery and innovation among students, teachers, and the general public.

Q: What is Perimeter Institute’s mission?

We believe breakthroughs are realized through a collision of intellect, imagination, and inspiration. We exist to enable the most ambitious research in theoretical physics and share its transformative power with the world. As such, Perimeter conducts:
  • Research, at the cutting edge of foundational theoretical physics
  • Training, for the next generation of brilliant young thinkers
  • Educational outreach, to share a love of science and boost scientific literacy among students, teachers, and the general public throughout Canada and beyond.

Q: What do scientists at Perimeter Institute research?

Perimeter researchers span nine research fields. Together, these fields combine our most important insights into the basic laws governing the universe, from subatomic and quantum scales, to the tabletop scales of condensed matter systems, to the description of the entire cosmos. Perimeter’s choice of complementary disciplines is unique worldwide; its emphasis on ambitious, unconstrained scientific enquiry – particularly at the intersections between fields - has led to a vibrant, growing research community. | more |

Q: Why is theoretical physics important?

Foundational theoretical physics is a cornerstone of modern quantitative science, on which so much else rests. It’s perhaps the highest-impact yet lowest-cost area of basic research. The goal of the field is to understand how the universe works at the most fundamental level. Its discoveries have advanced human understanding and seeded innovations across fields from mechanical engineering to wireless communication, and from electronics to power generation. Radio, television, semiconductors, computers, cell phones, lasers, fibre optics, holography, the Internet, GPS, solar cells, and diagnostic imagery – they are all rooted in breakthroughs in theoretical physics. As history shows us, one breakthrough in the field can literally change the world. | more |

Q: How many research scientists and trainees are at Perimeter Institute?

Perimeter is home to more than 150 researchers, ranging from master's-level research trainees to eminent senior scientists. The Institute hosts over 1,000 visiting researchers every year, making it a global hub for the interchange of ideas. It also houses the world’s largest group of independent postdoctoral researchers in theoretical physics.

Q: Is Perimeter Institute part of a university?

No. Perimeter Institute is a fully independent, not-for-profit organization advancing scientific research, training, and outreach. However, Perimeter partners with many universities and other theoretical and experimental research organizations across Canada and around the world. One celebrated partnership is Perimeter Scholars International (PSI) which combines the strengths of Perimeter Institute with the nearby University of Waterloo in the delivery of a master's-level research training program. Aside from the many cooperative institutional partnerships, Perimeter researchers collaborate regularly with colleagues at research organizations around the world.

Q: Is Perimeter Institute tied to BLACKBERRY – or any other private companies?

No. Perimeter has no affiliation to BlackBerry. The Institute was founded in part through the personal philanthropy of Mike Lazaridis, Founder, Board Vice-Chair, and Chair of the Innovation Committee of BlackBerry (formerly Research In Motion Limited).

Foundational theoretical physics is a cornerstone of modern quantitative science, on which so much else rests. The field advances our fundamental understanding of the universe, and its powerful ideas seed the technologies of tomorrow. Solar cells, computers, GPS, wireless technologies, and diagnostic imagery - they are all rooted in breakthroughs made by theoretical physicists.
1999 - The Beginning In 1999, with these bold ideas in mind, Mike Lazaridis, founder of Research In Motion and a leader in the smartphone revolution, hired Howard Burton, Founding Director, and formed a Board of Directors to take on the task of establishing a world-class institute devoted to theoretical physics. With their direction in the months that followed, Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics grew from an idea into reality. A small team conducted international visits and interviews at like-minded centres around the world, establishing the research direction and frameworks that govern Perimeter's research operations today. These include:

  • Perimeter is independent, unaffiliated with any university or private company. This gives it the freedom to recruit strategically into key research fields, while giving researchers added academic freedoms to push the boundaries of our current understanding and advance breakthroughs.
  • Perimeter will strengthen physics research throughout Ontario and Canada, emphasizing collaboration and partnerships with the local and global academic community.
  • Perimeter has a flat hierarchy of a true community of scholars, meaning that new and breakthrough ideas are the main focus, encouraging the research community to judge on ability, rather than age, citations, or publicity.
To complement the research and training activities, Perimeter Institute also established an educational outreach team to share the wonder and excitement of science across Canada and beyond. Special programs were designed to engage students, teachers and the general public through a popular public lecture series, summer camps for students and teachers, in-class resource kits, and special events.
So like I said folks,ya never know what you have right in your own backyard!

The way I see it anyway!
